An event to wel
We are excited
To evolve into a globally recognized department in the frontier areas of Naval Architecture and Ship Building.
This Department is one of the pioneers in the field of Naval Architecture education in this country and was established in 1975 with an aim to create a new and dynamic generation of Naval Architects to meet the requirements of the Indian Shipbuilding Industry, Ship Classification Societies, R&D organizations, Indian Navy, and related organisations. This Department maintains active collaboration and interaction with IITs, foreign Universities, shipyards and other industries. These organizations have been generous in extending their facilities and expertise to impart training to our students. The fruitful collaboration of this Department with Rostock University, Germany dates back to 1978 and remains as an important milestone in the development of this Department. The curriculum was drawn up and updated in consultation with experts from various academic institutions and industries. This has brought the course curriculum in conformity with international standards. The quality of education imparted and the resulting professional competence of the graduates enabled the Department to achieve a unique record of 100 percent placement of its graduates in India and abroad.
Greetings from the Department of Ship Technology (DoST), Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT), Kerala, India!!
The DoST was established in 1974 and is one of the oldest departments in CUSAT. DoST is a pioneer in the field of Naval Architecture education in the country and has produced global leaders in maritime sector, in diverse fields including design, construction, operation, survey, maintenance, education and research.
We are conducting a B.Tech course in Naval Architecture and Ship Building (NASB) whose graduates have a 100% placement record for the past several years, a M.Tech course in Computer Aided Structural Analysis and design (CASAD)whose graduates are well placed mostly in the marine industry, and a Ph.D programme with 41 scholars at present.
We are a truly interdisciplinary department with a very strong research atmosphere. Much of the graduate level research is done at the Computational Hydrodynamics and Structural Engineering (CHASE) Lab that software such as STAR-CCM+, CATIA, ABAQUS, ORCAFLEX, MATLAB, and ANSYS. The DoST has collaboration with the Indian Navy, MoUs with leading shipyards, Classification Societies and academic institutions.
The support from DOSTAS (Department of Ship Technology Alumni Society) and its various chapters to the overall development is highly encouraging.
Student achievements are recognized through RINA (Royal Institution of Naval Architects, London) student Naval Architect award, ClassNK best project award and also awards by PTA. A platform for developing technical and professional leadership among students is provided by the SNAS (Society of Naval Architecture Students). Department training and placement cell provides professional assistance for student placement as well as internship in leading companies.
We are also actively participating in industrial projects as well as consultancy services through DESON, the consultancy wing of DoST.
I invite you to browse through the web pages for further information
The Department of Ship Technology, CUSAT, has contributed immensely to the field of Naval Architecture, Shipbuilding and various other allied sectors in the global maritime sector. Over the past 47 years, the department has produced professionals who have created a profound impact in the maritime community. The department can take pride in the fact that they have been able to nurture well rounded professionals who in addition to being technically well equipped, do also understand what it takes to be successful and are willing to continually learn and work extremely hard to achieve their goals. I wish the young graduates of the department a bright and prosperous future
I am very pleased to note that the next batch of naval architects is graduating from CUSAT. ClassNK has long been associated with CUSAT and over the years we have recruited more than 26 CUSAT naval architects who work around the world. They are well rounded team players, brilliant, hardworking, and their contribution to ClassNK has been enormous. They are truly professional with positive attitude, and excellent in client management with strong commitment and dedication. Wishing the new young graduates every success for a bright future.
Naval architects from ‘Department of Ship Technology’ are excellent. They understand the requirements and concept very fast and complete the given tasks very properly on time. They are all well accepted in the world wide maritime industry due to the professionalism they have shown
Albwardy Damen has been hiring Naval Architects from the Department of Ship Technology, CUSAT, through campus interviews continuously for the past 16 years. The main qualities of CUSAT Naval Architects are their general attitude towards work, quick learning capabilities, ability to adapt to the work environment and get along with people from various nationalities. Their academic knowledge levels are found to be comparatively higher in a way that they can be trained and employed not only in core design departments but also in other areas like project management for ship building and ship repairs, cost estimation etc. The management of Albwardy Damen has always been appreciable of the performance of the CUSAT Naval Architects. I wish the young graduates every success in their future endeavors.
We take extreme pleasure in getting associated with CUSAT for the past so many years. The quality of students is excellent, so is their longevity in the organization is what keeps us coming back for more every year. The students from CUSAT are outstanding, and the ones we have employed from campus recruitment are generally an asset to IRCLASS. Their ability to apply theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies to practical work is indeed commendable. The placement process is always highly well-coordinated. We wish the fresh graduates from CUSAT all the best to achieve a successful career, and we anticipate CUSAT’s extended service for fulfilling our workforce requirements in the long run.
In the last 10 years Great Waters have hired graduates from Department of Ship technology and they all stood out as the best amongst other graduates from elsewhere in work performance, knowledge, ability to apply knowledge and most of all, attitude towards work. Attitude of an employee towards work is the most important aspect for a company in achieving results. Great Waters have been incredibly happy with all those graduates who have come and worked with us. Graduates from DOST have always shone in all industries, and which is why many of them are now at senior roles in major companies
The graduates from Department of Ship Technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology stand out for the following reasons while recruiting them.
1. The degree is aptly awarded for Naval Architecture & Ship building, encompassing theoretical tenets of ship design as well as practical aspects of ship construction. This makes them suitable for employment in design offices, class societies, research institutes and shipyards.
2. In addition to the academic curriculum they also undergo internship in institutions of their choice after the first, second and third year of the course. This, I have observed, aligns their class room learning with real work and they are better equipped to commence their job.
3. They undertake a full ship design project during the last year of the course, under the close guidance of the staff. This exercise, I have noticed, gives them a holistic understanding of ship design and especially the design spiral.
4. They attend seminars and presentations made by stalwarts from the industry (now on a virtual platform) and remain aware of recent innovations and trends in the field.Recent graduates, with whom i have interacted, were knowledgeable, analytical, diligent and able to communicate effectively.
In view of the above I find the graduates from this institution to be highly employable and am confident that they would contribute significantly to the organisation that they are part of.
